Q1 2026: Most In-Demand IT Consultant Skills in Sweden
31,000+ active assignments, Azure leading cloud demand, AI in the top three skills. Here's what the Swedish IT consulting market looks like entering Q2.
TL;DR: 31,000+ IT assignments active in Sweden as of March 2026. Azure, Python, and AI are the fastest-growing skill requirements. Stockholm still dominates volume.
We index Swedish IT assignments daily. Here's what the Q1 2026 data looks like.
The current market
As of March 20, 2026, consultant.dev tracks 31,153 active IT assignments across Sweden. That's up from approximately 8,000–9,000 visible assignments at the start of Q1—growth driven largely by the addition of new scraper sources in March.
Of the listings where work arrangement is explicitly tagged: 1,643 hybrid (5.3%) and 669 fully remote (2.1%). The remaining listings don't specify — we're improving our remote work detection to give more accurate figures here in a future update.
Top 10 roles by active listings
| Role | Active assignments |
|---|---|
| IT Support | 1,077 |
| IT Manager | 741 |
| Chief Technology Officer | 534 |
| Chief Information Officer | 429 |
| Software Developer | 334 |
| Project Manager | 306 |
| DevOps Engineer | 236 |
| IT Consultant | 215 |
| AI Engineer | 120 |
| Cloud Engineer | 113 |
IT Support leads by volume—enterprise helpdesk and service desk roles remain consistently high across sectors. The executive IT roles (CTO, CIO) are numerous because many listings originate from retained search and management consulting firms that post broadly.
For working IT consultants and developers, Software Developer, DevOps Engineer, AI Engineer, and Cloud Engineer are the most active hiring categories right now.
Most in-demand skills
Ranked by frequency in active job descriptions:
- Azure — 1,004 listings
- AI — 790
- SQL — 765
- Python — 713
- Agile — 705
- DevOps — 594
- Linux — 568
- CI/CD — 499
- Java — 449
- AWS — 396
- JavaScript — 361
- Kubernetes — 341
- React — 330
- .NET — 325
- Docker — 285
Azure is the clear infrastructure leader in the Swedish market, outpacing AWS by more than 2:1. Microsoft's enterprise footprint here is substantial—public sector, banking, and manufacturing all run heavily on Azure.
AI as a skill requirement has entered the top three. This isn't AI research—it's integration work: connecting LLMs to existing systems, building pipelines, handling model outputs. The demand is real and growing.
Python's rise is consistent with both the AI demand and the general shift toward data engineering and automation scripting. Java and .NET remain strong, anchored in banking, insurance, and public sector systems that aren't going anywhere.
Geographic split
| Region | Active assignments |
|---|---|
| Stockholm (Stockholms län) | 1,350 |
| Gothenburg (Västra Götaland) | 433 |
| Malmö (Skåne) | 318 |
| Uppsala | 87 |
| Remote (any location) | 669 |
Stockholm accounts for the largest tagged volume, as expected. Note that approximately 85% of listings don't specify a county—they appear as national postings or aren't geocoded. The figures above represent explicitly tagged assignments only.
What this means
A few things stand out from the Q1 data:
Azure + AI is the skill combination to have right now. Assignments requiring both are up across sectors. If you're a cloud engineer who hasn't added AI integration to your profile, Q2 is a good time to start.
DevOps remains foundational. CI/CD, Kubernetes, Docker, and Linux all appear in the top 15 skills independently—before any cloud-specific tags. The DevOps role itself has 236 active listings. Infrastructure automation isn't going anywhere.
IT Support volume is high, but it's not where the rates are. The 1,077 IT Support listings represent consistent demand, but these are largely L1/L2 roles. The higher-value work is in the Software Developer, DevOps, AI, and Architect categories—smaller in volume, higher in compensation.
